FALL

ABOUT THE ART

In his new series Sidney’s work is deeply influenced by his decision to move away from the city. Where in the past it was mostly the bustling of the city that provided Sidney with inspiration and material for his art, he now looks for peace in nature inspired by the Japanese technique of Zen painting (Sumi-e), in which simplicity and spontaneity are crucial.

The change of seasons, the rhythm of day, the growth of plants and trees, even the way they find their way back after they have been cut down – there are no limits to the development of natural things. In nature, a pure way of life can be experienced, which logically includes birth and death. To accept the transience of form has become an essential theme for Sidney, also to grow as an artist.

In his work, this is being expressed by putting more focus on abstraction and impulsiveness instead of photorealism. Acrylic paint and spray cans, which were used in his earlier work, made way for oriental ink. This material offers new possibilities and gives the work a softer character.

The result of the work process is also different and more unpredictable. Brush strokes and shapes take on a life of their own and provide beautiful surprises along the way. Only in this way authenticity can grow in the works and in Sidney as an artist.
